Summa Sacre Magice, Part II

Updated: Aug 6, 2023

The following is a Latin transcription of the Ars Notoria section of the Summa Sacre Magice. A portion of the Latin transcription has been made possible thanks to Timothy Lundy, Ph.D.; his transcription has been edited by me. This transcription could use some light editing still. I will make corrections at a later date.

[1] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 7 and NS 4. [2] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 7 has “pie et fortis” meaning “pious and strong”. [3] One of the angel names referenced in Ars Notoria, section 24. [4] A Greek transliteration of the Hebrew phrase, “Please, I beseech you, save us!” [5] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 10. [6] Emmanuel? [7] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 16. [8] Greek, Christos for “Christ.” [9] Or, Hodes? [10] Ars Notoria, section 16. [11] Ars Notoria (Version B), variation 3. [12] Compare Ars Notoria, section 22, which has the prayer called the “queen of tongues.” However, SSM agrees better with Ars Notoria (Version B), section 16, variation 4, which SSM indicates is just the third part of Hazaylemath. [13] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 22. [14] Ars Notoria, section 24 appears fragmentary against SSM. Liber Iuratus Honorii, XXIV Prayer has a stronger agreement with SSM. [15] Ars Notoria 29a-b. [16] Ars Notoria (VersionB), section 34. Lamehc Ragna is called the crown jewel of the Lord. [17] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 35, variation 5. [18] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 43. [19] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 46. [20] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 50. [21] Ganellus indicates that there are three parts of the Agloros prayer, pointing to Geherac and Theyzehumechoman as the latter two parts. In the Ars Notoria, Geherac appears as Geherahel; the Ars Notoria lacks the third part. [22] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 52. [23] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 54. [24] Padym is the second part of the Hamytlyahel prayer. It is missing in the Ars Notoria. [25] Saretes or Saretz. [26] Haparoketes or Haparoketz. [27] Or Meghakebetz. [28] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 62. [29] Semoth Lamen is the second part of the Gemoth Gehel prayer, being the nineteenth prayer of the Generals. In the Ars Notoria, they are treated as two separate prayers belonging to the intermediate class between the General prayers and the Special prayers. See Ars Notoria (Version B), section 69. [30] Ars Notoria (Version B), section 140. The Hanazay prayer belongs to the first figure of rhetoric according to the gloss of section 140 in Version B. Interestingly, section 140 points to the Gezomanai prayer which is said to belong to the second nota of rhetoric. However, Gezomanai is a misplaced General prayer; it is identified as a General prayer on account of.... According to SSM, Gezomanai is the second part of the Assaylemath prayer. Another clue of redaction is right here in this passage which says Hanazay is the twentieth prayer placed over seven other prayers. It is not clear what those other seven prayers are since SSM does not present Hanazay itself. From looking at the Ars Notoria, it is possible these other prayers may be those belonging to rhetoric, geometry, and arithmetic. [31] Psalm 67 (Vulgate).
